Why you need a physical challenge + A beautiful metaphor for life
You need to take on a physical challenge.
We all get used to being comfortable.
It’s a part of being human, we crave feeling safe and comfortable. It’s hardwired into our brains.
Modern life has made our lives more comfortable than ever before.
We have more food, shelter, and entertainment than any other time in human history, and yet in many 1st world countries, there is an epidemic of depression and mental health problems.
This is obviously a multi-factorial issue, but I believe that a lack of challenge and discomfort is a driving force behind the rising mental health crisis.
Humans for centuries before us were living harsh, uncomfortable lives, and still they strived to achieve their goals and aspirations.
Humans are built to struggle and overcome adversity to achieve what they desire, and this mechanism is still inside us as modern humans - but many of us lack an outlet for this.
This is why I advocate for everyone to set a physical goal, and put a plan in place to achieve it.
The struggle of the journey to achieving the goal will give you a great deal of satisfaction, and help you build the skill of resilience.
A story of embracing discomfort and challenging yourself stood out to me recently, watching the 2022 Ironman World Championships documentary.
In 2022, Chris Nikic became the first person with Down Syndrome to complete a full Ironman - a story of true determination and pushing what you thought was possible for yourself.
We should all choose our own challenge, whether this be a triathlon, marathon, getting stronger at the gym, or losing some weight.
You will never regret challenging yourself in this way, and becoming the best version of yourself.
So before the year ends, set yourself a challenge. Something that scares you, but is realistic for you to achieve.
